clear w124 side indicators/repeaters

i just got my euro spec side repeaters/indicators installed.

FINALLY.

i am stoked!

i've had these for over a year, but nervous about cutting into my fenders- i'm funny like that.

MANY THANKS to mbenz for finding these for me!

i'm a little more visible when signaling.

the procedure took about 3 hours.

peter

They look nice, Peter. How did you know where to cut? Where did you connect the wires and how did you route them?

Regards,

dakota

thanks.

steve/mbenz sent me some close up pictures showing a tape measure at several angles.

from all the pictures i looked at, they varied a couple of inches up or down.

i made a reversable template out of cardboard.

these are also available in orange [earlier models].

this style was used on w126,w107,w124,w202.

these plugged into the turn signal indicator wiring.

Very nice. From the picture, it looks like the plug just piggybacks with the turn signal plug - so no splicing? I imagine the wire routing is evident once you get in there.

Do you have the part numbers of both the clears and the earlier amber version?

Thanks,

thanks paul.

dakota

i had to have the guy splice into the turn signal plug, because he would not use the 'euro' turn signal plug i had.
he would not hook up my front turn signals the 'true euro' way, because "my car did not come that way from the factory". i insisted i would still be legal and also asked if land rovers light set up was illegal.

when my regular mechanic recovers more from back surgery, it'll be fixed MY way.

i'm sorry i do not have part number for orange ones. maybe someone who knows color codes for m.b. parts can come up with it.

bekkers used to have some of the orange ones. they can also be gotten in a smoked color.

if you get these [or anyone else] i can provide a template for you.

Thanks Peter. I think the "euro" way is that the front corner light is only a single filament bulb. So it is only a turn signal - no parking light (the city light performs that function). So it has a two-pin connector plug, rather than a three-pin plug as the DOT models have.

Thanks for the part number.

Nice little mod. Correct about the Euro turn signal only being a single filament cos it is only a turn signal.

Matt.

Peter,

Looks good. I have a question for you. Does your side marker blink in pattern with you turn signal or is it off pattern (they don't blink at the same time). I am wondering because I installed some non factory Mercedes turn signals and they blink off pattern, which irratates me, but if yours goes with the pattern, then I may switch.

One last thing. The hole that your drilled into your fender, was it square or round?

Thanks,
Shanta

shanta

thanks man.

yes, these DO blink in syn with rear and front signals.

the hole is pretty much a rectangle.
it is aprox 2 1/4" wide and 5/8" high. [you will see in the picture] it opens [ into a semi-circle] where the plug/bulb holder piece goes in 3/4" there.

this picture will make more sense.
this picture was coutesy of the 'euro pimp' himself, steve aka mbenz

so these do blink in synch with the turn signals, cool then I am going to switch mines out. Mines are spliced into the turn signal wire but they do not blink in snych and I hate that.

I was thinking about putting porsche ones from the newer carerras on from inside the front fender lip. How do you like them at night? Do other drivers notice you better?

You would you be MORE visible if your turn signals were wired as running lights instead of only being on when you use your signal. In fact, for max visiblity one should wire the side marker to be on as a running light. My W124 had side markers installed by P/O and are wired the "Mercedes" way. Though I think the side markers are a great looking mod, I do regret loosing my "running" lights. The "city" lights are BARELY visible - they are WAY less visible than having just the turn signals lit up. OK, I'm done ranting -

Anyhow - cool looking mod mod - IMHO would be good to take one step further and get bulbs that appear clear but flash yellow. Does anyone know if you can get just the lense? I'd like to switch my yellows for clears to match my soon to be installed Hella clear corners.
