The hood pad on my 300E is disentegrating and the adhesive that holds it is no longer holding it up(It fell on my head the other day when I opened the hood). I have made a temporary repair with pull ties until the new pad I ordered arrives. I need some direction on what type of adhesive to use, plus any other tips or things I should look out for when doing this job.
Thanks Phil |

I'm about to replace my hood pad as well in my 300TE. After some research, here's my Plan:
1.) Remove old pad, and remove old adhesive on underside of hood (I'm using 3M "General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner", P/N 051135-08984-available at ACME Auto if there's one near you) 2.) Spray underside of hood with 3M "Super Trim Adhesive", P/N 051135-08090. It's made specifically to withstand heat, and is perfect for this application 3.) Apply new hood pad That's it! BE sure to apply the adhesive to BOTH bonding surfaces and allow to tack up for about 5 min before attaching them together. You should apply the glue in a uniform up and down pattern on both surfaces to insure uniform coverage. I have seen people try to just goop it on and spray it without any uniformity and the hood pad will fall off within a week.

I just replaced the hood pad on my 300e this past week-end. This is a definite DIY job. I used the 3M products Michael talked about, I sprayed the adhesive like Benzmac said, and Presto job done! ------------------ Donwo 1987 300E (60,000 mi) [This message has been edited by donwo (edited 08-25-1999).] |

What is the part # for the hood pad?.It is difficult to find out the price in the partshop without this,I think this is the Partsshop's achilles heel.

I'm thinking about replacing the hood pad on my 1986 2.3-16V. I understand about the INSTALLATION procedure, but what about the REMOVAL? Seems like the (open cell) foam will have deteriorated over time/temp and will come off in chunks, slabs, and pieces. Did anyone cover their engine bay with plastic to prevent the s@#$ from getting in? Or will the pad come off in one piece with no "hangers-on"? Does one have to scrape residue off the hood with, say, a plastic putty knife? More "removal/cleaning" insight would be appreciated.
Thanks! Brian |

I replaced my hoodpad more than a year ago and it looks like it's going to stay for life. 3M-#08090 is the adhesive I used; and like any contact adhesive, apply it thoroughly and evenly, then allow the glue to set-up before making contact.
I also found it necessary to wedge a few old (hockey) sticks, strategically located between the engine compartment and some pegboard scraps, to provide compression against the pad during the initial set (with the hood lowered to the intermediate position). Barrie |

We place a sheet over the engine compartment. Then we remove the chunks in as large a section as posible. Then we use a wet-dry vacuum cleaner with a angular straight end to scrape down the remaining material. A sharp puddy knife persuades the tougher spots.
We also use the 3M 08090 spray adhesive in the technique used above. The benefit to the 08090 over many other good adhesives is the wand type spray pattern which allows for even coverage, both sides. ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician |
