Dead Aux. Fan - 124

After I finished changing the oil in my 95 E320 last night I fired the old girl up and proceeded to look around. That's when I noticed the drivers side aux. fan isn't working. My engine temps. are still fine so I had no idication of it failing.

Anyone replaced one of these in the past on a 124 model? It looks fairly easy and by what I gather from the parts page I will have to change them both.

Any hints or cautions I should know about before I go ripping and tearing into it??

Thanks all

Are you sure the fan is dead?

Did you test it? Make sure it is rotating freely, then apply power to it. How is the A/c working?

I haven't removed it yet to bench test it, the 2 fans are wired in parallel so I know it's getting power because the right one works. The A/C is working great (thankfully) and my engine temps. are normal. I'm beginning to wonder if I even need it

The only reason I posted though was to see if the job was as easy as it looks with no hidden terrors. I'm sure your aware of how something can look so easy and several days later (as your cleaning up the mess) your thinking to yourself you hope you never have to do it again.......

And yes it rotates freely, much freer than the working one which is odd.

That should give you a clue................

I'll bet the brushes have siezed in the carriers and are no longer touching the commutator.

The may also just be worn down.............any way, the fix should be very cheap.

Is the Aux Fan supposed to be on when engine is on?

On my 400E one fan (passenger side) always runs but the one on the driver side I have yet to see running. No overheating yet...but do I need to root cause this or is this normal?...Does the aux fan turn on at near redline temps?

P.s. The above figures are for E320. I don't have the numbers for E420.
tkamiya Thanks for the insight!

Sounds like my high speed fan may kick on
at approx. 107C as I have not seen the temp. climb beyond that. When temp has reached that point I am usuually in stop and go traffic and with the AC running. Just to confirm I will have to stop somewhere when it hits 107C and see if both are running!
