Is there a trick to adjust the transmission vacuum modulator on a 190e

It's a 93 190e 2.6L. The transmission shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and less harsh on 3rd and 4th gear. I did everything I could to make it shift better. It seems to be impossible to get to the modulator. Steve Brotherton on one of my previous posts regarding this issue stated that it's tricky to adjust due to location and replacement requires dropping the transmission down. I am just curious if any one was able to do the adjustment without dropping the transmission down. Is there a trick? If dopping the tranny is needed, I will just put the new one I purchased several months ago.
Thanks,

the trick is very long fingers and skinny hands, a neck brace might also help......
