power window 87 420 driver front
hi folks
1987 420sel got the inner door liner off and was looking to be sure the motor was my problem. per thomaspin instructions i switched the relays and nothing happen. so... now i'm at the motor. there are only 2 wires coming from the motor so i am assuming the motor is 12v reversible power on / power off. so i took these 2 wires and i applied 12v to one then the other and no movement. so my question is shouldn't i have seen movement if the motor was good? thks much craig

Craig -
I vote 'Yes'. How else could the power get in there? Sounds like a trip to the local wrecker is in order, or I will be glad to try mine if you get stuck. Probably hard to buy a new motor on its own. Thomas. |

hi thomas
well i definitely pinned the motor as the culprit. when i got home tonite i took a few minutes and tested the circuits in the door and my vom showed power on power off at the connection block. so the only thing not working in the system is the motor. now apparently there are 3 versions of motors. one with 8 teeth and one with 10. i also see one with 14. who knows. phil tells me i need to count the teeth before ordering. but tell me...is there absolutely no way of removing the motor without pulling the whole assembly out? the factory mbz body and chassis book keeps referring to lowering the crank window. the only way i know of doing that now is to release the window from the regulator. are there any tricks to this?? tks much craig ps: i am going to get a new motor but that motor is going in the black 420. i'll take the used one and put in the gold 420. hopefully they will have the same tooth layouts.

I doubt you can get the motor out without removing the regulator - it's just too tight through the access port in the door panel. OTOH, removing the regulator/motor assembly involves removing 4 10mm nuts and unsnapping the wires in the plug to permit extrication. The two vertically spaced bolts retain the window channel, with the top one doubling up to hold the regulator assmbly. The two horizontally spaced nuts retain the assembly. Not that hard. You will have to wiggle the window up and down to permit you to remove the nylon slider from the alloy channel at its base. If you are frozen up, break the plastic slider and follow my web pix to replace it. It's a $2 part.
As for the # of teeth, I don't know. I'll take a look in my W126 book to see if I can crack it from the pics, but these tend to be of poor quality. I'll let you know. |
