Hi all

How often should the transmission fluid be replaced on a 1997 MB E200? it has the 5 speed automatic transmission.

also are there two different types of oil in the gearbox, or does it use the same oil to shift gears, and for lubrication?
i've never had automatics so i know next to nothing in this matter..

722.6 five speed automatic uses special MB synthetic fluid. Use nothing else!!

When changing the fluid, the temperature of the fluid should be 80C. The dealer has a device for doing this, and you might want to check the labour charge for a tranny service.

BTW, the 722.6 needs a service only every 90-100,000 kilometers at the earliest.

oh its still early then (only 60k km on the clock) :)

at 80degrees, why is that? would it cause too much pressure if you fill it up at room temperature? (35+ degrees in here!)
if so... i guess this can't be a DIY-job :(

to tell the truth i never use the dealers - robbers the bunch o' them! :D

Tranny fluid level changes considerably depending on the temperature. The fluid level should be set with the fluid at 80C in order to get the level correct. This tranny is very sensitive to the fluid level, so I (and I do almost all my own service) take it to the dealer for this particular job. Most charge 1.0 to 1.5 hours labour plus parts.

I abhor the dealers myself, but use them for two jobs: Tranny fluid and coolant change.

the tranny fluid i can understand - but why do you take it in for coolant change? last time i replaced it i took it to my local "friendly mechanic" (;)) and we did it together... next time i intent to do it myself :o

not much to go wrong is there? just have to be careful to bleed it right..

My local dealer does a coolant change for $29.00. Better price than the indie garage, and cheap considering the work required and disposing of the old coolant.
