Tranny gets into R from P or N, but takes 2-2.5 seconds to do so. REbuild soon?
 

As stated in the subject, when I put the gear into reverse, it takes a bit to get it geared up. I know RUN.EXE had to rebuild his after it'd take 4 secs to get into gear.

I did tranny service a year ago, 30k miles ago.

Fluid still red and nice.

Any type of preventive/active maintenance other than service can help?

Any tuning or tweaks can make it better?

How much do those AMG wheels cost? I have a black 300E and if I keep it I was thinking of the AMG wheels.

Cheap way to keep your tranny going....

Go out and buy 2 quarts of the Lucas tranny fluid, you can get it at kragens (8$ a quart) drain the fluid in your pan and fill it with the lucas stuff. Stuff works wonders on worn out trannies, and figure it this way, 16$ is a lot less than 1200$.

I went out and shifted the car and for me it's more like 1 to 1 1/2 seconds.

Is that Lucas fluid the same as Textron 3?

I discovered my car is leaking tranny fluid. Seems to be from the area towards the front of the tranny. I'm gonna look underneath tomorrow.

Is there an area that's common for the 300E to leak from?

It might not be your tranny leaking, but actually the tranny cooler lines.

I have had both lines break on me, and since they have the spring wrapping around them you couldn't clearly see the break (it was located at the connector and the rubber hose). Mercedes has a new part to replace the old lines, the new ones do now have the spring around it.

its like that marvels oil: its a "mystery" just what it does.

i would get dignosis/estimates from at least 2 sources.
#1 local dealer and #2 your local trusted MB indy.

if your keeping the car, nothing in a bottle is a fix! :(

Your reverse clutch drum frictions are more than likely worn out. When the clutch pack clearance gets too great it takes a while for the drum to fill with oil and that is what takes time. If the Lucas works for you great, but you are looking at a minimum of replacing the frictions in the front drum. MBZ makes a revised front pump you may want to look into while you are there. Good luck, hope the Lucas works, and please post if it does..

Also what about the abrupt knock when getting the car into D or sometimes rarely also in R?

Are you parked on a hill when this happens? On a hill there is extra pressure on the shift. If you're not on a hill I don't know the answer. I'm a rookie here.

Do NOT use any Lucas products in your car. I've seen demonstrations of Lucas engine, power steering and differential additives in action, and they all cause terrible foaming by sucking and trapping air in the oils. The foaming very much destroys all lubrication properties of the base oils.

Stay away from them! Useless and dangerous.

When reverse gear doesn't work properly or slip, it is the reverse clutch pack causing the problem. M.B. Doc once told me that parts for that kind of repair don't cost much, but there is a lot of labor involved (which translates to big chunk of dough).

Changing new ATF fluid does not help. You have to live with the slipping reverse problem until it's completely non-working, or have your transmission R&R. Nothing else can help.

Been there, done that.

Well I Guess I'll wait till it breaks down and I have to tow it! Thanks :P

I looked under my car and it looks like the tranny leak is from the front seal. The MB book says live with it until you need a rebuild.

Any opinions?
