W124 windshield/headlight wiper problem.
I seem to get all the weird ones...the "Geez....I ain't NEVER seen one do THAT before...." ones.
The patient is an '87 W124/300D sedan. The the wipers and washers (both headlight and windshield) work fine, all speed, wash & "delay" functions operate correctly, and all grounds & wiring appears to be intact.......but the headlight wipers "park" pointing "up" at the top of their stroke....and the windshield wiper parks exactly in the center of the windshield pointing straight up. With the vehicle off, you can (easily, without force) swing the windshield wiper down to it's correct "parked" position, but the moment you turn the key, it swings back to it's position of choice; straight up. Any ideas? I'm "good" with electrical issues....but I'm starting to wonder if I need an exorcist. Thanks for any/all input! Jim Steere Everything Automotive Crystal, MI www.usedbenzparts.com |

Hello,
Are you the original owner of this car? Well I have seen a few people alter their wiper so that it rests vertically, just like the DTM racing cars. Maybe someone did that to your car.

I know nothing of the car's history...I just purchased it, but I'd bet that this isn't due to a modification. I talked to the previous owner, and he said his mechanic said it was the "wiper module"(???....eh?).
I can tell you what it "isn't" from switching "known good" parts from another W124 I have here for sale and a little more research. It isn't the "mutifunction relay" or the headlight washer relay, or the wipe/wash switch. Also....I was mistaken on the headlight wipers....they don't arbitrarily park straight up....they park wherever they are when you release the washer switch (with the headlights on). Completely baffled... Jim |

Sounds like the gearbox "thinks" the wiper is all the way to the left when it is actually in the center of travel.
The only other thing I can think of that could do this is the intermittant wipe relay or control box -- if it is bad, it may be cutting the power in the wrong place, or has a wire off. Peter

The wiper linkage has been connected to the wiper motor shaft incorrectly. You'll need to remove the wiper assembly and take the wiper linkage off the motor shaft and correctly install it.
No real good idea on the headlight wipers BUT possibly they are installed on the wrong sides (right to left) Gilly |
