with the battery bulb in, car wont stop

what gives...

was replacing some bulbs in thedash of my 1981 500 sel that is converted to a 300d

so when i put in the new bulb in hte battery indicator light in the instrumnet cluster, start the car and then turn the key off, IT WONT STOP??

so i take the buld bout, turn off the key and it stops.

i tey it a few times and same thing.

when the buld is in the little brown housing in the instrument cluster and i turn off the key and even take it out of the barrell the car wont stop.

any ideas folks?

heywood970 -

You are probably the only one who would know how your car is wired, being that it is a conversion.

If you have a modified wiring diagram, I would try to find out where and how that bulb might interact with the vacuum shutoff of the diesel. If the ignition switch was not replaced, does it control a solenoid for the vacuum shutoff? You might need to isolate the bulb with a diode. I suppose there are other possibilities.

Conversions can get pretty complicated.

Good luck with it,
Wes

friend of mine suggested a diode also, is that essentially a "non-return" valve for elecrticity?
thx a mil

Sorry for the late reply. Posted and then promptly left town for a couple days. Yes, a diode is a one way "valve" for electricity.

Again, you will need to know how your car is wired in order to know where you will have to insert the diode to stop the current flow in order to prevent the problem.
