special fittings for MB A/C

Does a 1979 300SD take a different fitting than all other r-12 cars? I was at my mom's cousin's house when his gauges wouldn't fit my 300SD. He used them on his '89 Ford Ranger. I asked a guy at Autozone, and he said that they didn't sell any r-12 fittings. Is it that Ford is different than the others or is Mercedes different from the others? Then where could I get this fitting? Dealership is probably out of the question.
Thanks
David

P.S.
You guys are the greatest and were one of my defending arguments as to why I should in fact get a Mercedes-Benz.

If it has been "converted" then the fittings will be for 134 refrigerant. What was the cousins gauges "marked" for R12 or 134? He may have had the wrong gauges or the Ford may have been converted. I have seen alot of different type fitting combinations.

The gauges were r-12 gauges. His truck is r-12. So is my Mercedes. I was just wondering if Mercedes use a different fitting then all other manufacturers, and where I could buy one. What other cars would have the same fitting?
Thanks
David

Unless something has changed the SD should be standard r12 fittings.

ford has differant fittings. if it was converted then the fittings on the old fittings would be obvious.

The MB has 1/4" inverted flare on both sides. Many American cars have a 3/16" inverted flare on the high side as an effort to idiot proof it. Other various fittings have been used a few times on American cars, again in an effort to idiot proof it.

That said, the standard R12 gauge hoses with no adapters installed will fit the original MB fittings.

Good luck,
