Personal Note - Good news, bad news

I have been a member at mercedesshop.com since very early 2000. Working for a sotware company with a 100Mbit network coupled with extremely fast typing skill I have been able to make quite a few posts. Most people go get coffee at coffee break while I am hammering the keyboard in mshop. On slow days I hammer even more.

In late 2000 the company had its first of MANY layoffs. We now employ about 15% of the number of employees that we employed three years ago. The company is now being bought and not all of us will survive the transition. I have been through not one but TWO significant paycuts in that time.

Faced with being on the street is not a happy thought. I have now landed a new and exciting job with another company. I will be making alot more money with great opportunities for further career growth. The timing has been extremely fortunate. So this is the good news.

The bad news is that I will be doing more business travel and unfortunately very little will be to Europe. European travel was the only thing that made the last few years bearable. I enjoy it very much.

Due to the added travel and the fact that I will office at home in the boondocks with a 26K baud dial up as best case connection, I regret that my mercedesshop participation will curtail HEAVILY.

I have enjoyed very much all the postings and the friends that I have made in the last 3 1/2 years thanks to mercedesshop. I have probably made about as many folks mad at me as I have that were happy with me, but that's just me.

I will not be disappearing from mshop, and will still try to get together with the mshop guys when I can, but I won't be logging in near as much.

Thanks to all of you for a lot of great information, friendly correspondence and spirited dialog.

Old MB guys never die, they just keep on swiggin' diesel fuel and makin' smoke.

Have a great day,

Great news, but spend a little of that extra cash on cable or sattelite access. You probably won't get DSL until the end of the decade.

Thanks for the warm responses. I guess I wasn't clear, the phone lines where I live won't support DSL. Unless I move I am many years away from high speed access. A dish might be a solution except they only provide dial up speed for a VPN which would be my main justification for such expense.

I will be traveling so much that it will be hard to justify alot of expense for a dish for my home office without high speed VPN access.

Again, thanks for the warm responses.

Have a great day,

Larry, What does 'Treiben bis sie fallen' mean? I was always curious. You are the man. I tried to read every post you chimed in on because it was almost always a blend of common sense and technical background - especially concerning vibrations, shudders, shimmies, wobbles, pulling...all leading to the 4 P's of suspension work. I will continue to look for your posts even if they are now few and far between.

Ah yes, the evolution of life...

Congratulations on the new career move, and best wishes!

We will miss your vast MB knowledge resource (especially since I am dealing with all sorts of suspension problems on my W124 ), but even a post or two is better than none!

I think we all go through phases where we just don't get to do certain things as much as we like...as my daughter gets older, her activities permeate my interests...I have MB parts i bought months ago that I have YET to install! ...and my once-avid VW car show hobby gave way to marriage and family over a decade ago.

BTW I still have my 100 MHz PC with a 26K modem as my home workstation despite the cutting edge tools available to me at work! :p

Keep in touch!

I was told ...

"treben bis sie fallen" means "drive them til they drop". Is that right?

Larry,

It's always been great reading your posts and advice. Also following your escapades (blowing up your daughters car, etc.)

I will definitely look forward to reading your posts even tho they may be fewer and farther between.

Good luck in your new position.

I also will be enjoying a new position in the not-too-distant future. I will be moving from the "hot one day-cold the next" weather of Michigan to sunny Florida (Sarasota area). I'm looking forward to seeing what kinda deals I can get on some nice MB's.

See 'ya 'round.

If I remember correctly, something like "drive them till they die" or "drop".

Larry,

I'll still be getting through Big D on occassion, next pass through will be on Sunday 9/14 this year though. Return trip may be on a Friday. Since you will likely not be in the city we won't plan anything. However, should I get a week long, or two week trip into the city, I call and we'll plan something, especially if it spans a weekend.

Larry,

Congratulations on the new position. I do know how important such opportunities and changes are these days ...

I have always looked forward to your practical and conservative approaches to the car problems posted.

I will miss your frequent posting. We will almost always agreed except regarding vented rotors!

Larry, best of luck, and thanks from all of us for all your shared knowledge.
FWIW, a 26K link isn't that bad for simple stuff like this; my TVcable access at home is faster, but not incredibly, than my laptop over dialup at work.
