I hear that you can add one ATF liter to every full tank of diesel or 30% Kerosene for every full tank. How true is this? Every when is this recommended? Francis |

francis,
Why are you wanting to do this? Is there a fuel system problem? Good luck, ------------------ Larry Bible '84 Euro 240D, 516K miles '88 300E 5 Speed '81 300D Daughter's Car Over 800,000 miles in Mercedes automobiles |

Fuel system is OK. I just want to do this as maintenance.

Francis, best thing I found for regular maintenance is the Redline Diesel Fuel Catalyst. Start off by adding 1 whole bottle to your fillup and then after that add a little everytime you fillup. It keeps the injectors lubricated and also reduces noise and smoke from the exhaust.
Give it a try. ------------------ FrankieZ 84 500SEL EURO 87K 85 300D 267K (and still goin' strong) |

Adding ATF to the fuel got started in the '70s, and was proven wrong. Do not add anything to the fuel not created for that purpose. Clean fuel, clean fuel filters, and clean injectors should be all that is needed. That is the way the engine was designed. The products made as diesel additives are OK if you are having problems or feel you need to do something extra. I drove my 300D 23 years and added nothing but fuel. Regards, Ed

francis,
Kerosene is used in extremely cold climates to prevent the fuel from gelling. ATF has been used as a cleaning agent in the past. If your goal is to clean the injection system, I believe you will be much better served with commercial fuel additives designed for the purpose. As Ed said, as long as everything is working well, you shouldn't need to use any chemicals. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I agree with Larry, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I see you are in the South Pacific. You should never have need to add any kerosene as an anti-gel agent unless the next ice-age starts up soon. Definately use the Red-line if you just wish to occasionally clean the system, or if you are unsure of the quality of your fuel. OK. Thanks guys! Fuel quality is bad here. We ocasssionally have to drain the tank coz' there's very fine black mud - about 3-6months only. The pre-filter is the first to show signs and after cleaning the pre-fliter and the black stuff if there again (after about 3 weeks, we already drain the tank. I just want to take extra care of teh injectors (now that they are in good condition). Francis 85' 300D Euro (W124) |

Hi Francis,
I spent some time at Clark AB in the Phillipines. That must be something to see your MB driving down the road alongside those jeepneys. I'd be afraid that they wouldn't have any regard for my baby (MB). Take care, ------------------ FrankieZ 84 500SEL EURO 87K 85 300D 267K (and still goin' strong) |
