300SDL serpintine belt broke
Well we were pulling into the driveway and turning the car around when the serpintine belt broke.
Now I really can't complain. The car has never left us stranded. and if it had to break, in the driveway was great. I turned it around ( with no power steering it was a bear) and went to Pep boys to get a new belt. I reviewed the posts on replacing the belts and attacked it. Took about 2 hours to do the job. However I did not remove the radiator as recommneded in the service manual supplement for the SDL. I was able to get the fan/clutch assembly aout without the removal. It took some tool fabrication but I did it. I was hoping the car would not do anything like this. This is the car my Daughter drives and we will take her down to Texas A&M on Saturday. When that is done we are going to get rid of the car. We will have the SL and the 300TD. That will be all the 2 of us need. I don't have the wagon finished yet. (rebuilding the AC system completely) I dicided it was more important to be with the kids thatn work on a car. So when they are both gone ( My son s up at OSU, we braught him ther last Friday.) I will have plenty of time to finish the wagon. I am considering donating the car to Dallas Can Academy and writing it off on my taxes. I would consider selling it if someone wants it as a parts car. But I can realize about $1000 on my taxes so I would have to get that from someone if they wanted it. I'm not interested in the expaining that will have to be done with this car. Its a good car but its age is showing. And I'm just ready to get rid of it. I may post it on the for sale area and if anyone really wants it I may consider it. Back to the belt replacement. It was a fairly easy job. I found that not removing the radiator was actually faster, in my estimate. thatn removing it. But it did require some creative tools and working in a tight area between the radiator and the fan/clutch assembly. so I have a few scratch marks on the arm. Dave

Is she just starting? Corps Turd or Non-Reg? A day duck or living on campus? Does she know about having to do a push up for every year of her graduating class? I had to drop and knock out 81 on a regular basis, at least she'll be doing less that 10 (unless the new traditions have added the hundreds . A T M I'm sure a lot has changed in the 20+ years since I strolled the campus, but if you have never visited the "C", the MSC - Memorial Student Center, it is recommended. Much history there, halls lined with potraits and histories of Medal of Honor recipients who were Aggies.

What manual tells you to remove the radiator to replace the belt? It's a lot easier if you remove the shroud and fan, but there's nothing special about that. With the shroud draped on the fan, put a piece of cardboard over the radiator fins to protect the radiator and your skin through the rest of the job. Too little too late, huh?

The "supplement to service manual for Diesel engines 602,603"
Says on page 13.10-324/4 "4. on the engine 603.96 (turbo) the visco-fan coupleing cannot be removed without removing the radiator." I understand why they say this it is close and did require some creative work to not remove it. I have the 1986 300SDL. But the section does seem to be geared more towards the 201 body. Dave

Dear Mike,
This is Dave's daughter, the AGGIE!!! Im so excited, I'm not CORPS, its my first year and I'm studying elementary education and living on campus in Mosher - commons dorms. Probably not a lot has changed since you went, the same ol'army strong traditions that were there while you attended. I love it!! Yeah, im not taking the car, i have heard parkings a mess down there. Always great to talk to another Aggie, thanks for the encouragement. PS: I love the MSC!!! especially the flag room, its beautiful, Its very cool that they respect the traditions by taking off their hats, and whats better, everyone actually does it. ~Lee :-) ATM

Lee,
You'll absorb soooo much tradition during the first month. Midnight yell practices the night before every game and of course the obligatory kiss everytime the Aggies score (don't tell your Dad ). Living on campus, but not in the Corps = Non-reg, but even the non-regs adhere to many of the Old Corps traditions. My home was Moore Hall, over by Northgate, close to Sbisa and right across the street from Charlie's (geedunk - convienence store). Parking was a real mess back in the 70's with only 28K students, has to be horrible now. Back then Kyle Field was still a horseshoe stadium, and only two decks high. Now it could host a pro game. Remember, Highway 6 runs both ways. You'll hear that a lot. Be sure to let me, and any other Aggies on the board how things are going. Also let us in on any new "Rock the Good Ag" jokes.

Hmm... the 603 was never offered in the 201 so it might be a mixes metaphor. The regular section of the 126 manual says nothing about removing the radiator. However tight, there's enough room to fit a typical 8mm hex key. Then it's just a matter of fitting a length of pipe for leverage. I'm curious to know how you sorted it out.

The 126 manual does not cover the 6 cylinder diesel that was in the 300SDL. The engine manual I have is for the 602,603 engine
It covers the following cars 1986 190D2.5, 300SDL 1987 190D2.5, 300D,300TD,300SDL 1988 190D2.5 1989 190D2.5 1990 300D2.5,350SDL 1991 300D2.5,350SD,350SDL The seperate supplement for the engine is copied below Dave PS I did get it out without removing the radiator. You are correct in using a 8mm hex key or a small 8mm allen socket. I got the socket from the snap-on distributor in the local area, Its a Hazet socket. I just used some small thin lockpliers that I have and it worked ok. I held the lockpliers and spun the fan coupling pulley. It was free spining since the belt had broken and was off the car.
