W126 cruise amp interchangeable??

Cruise worked intermittently in my 300SDL but has gotten worse over the last year and now no longer engages. When it did work, it worked perfectly. I've removed the amplifier and resoldered, but it still doesn't work.

Looking at buying a new amp on EBay.. have found some sellers who are selling amps in "working" condition. I would consider GDL or another supplier of good amps, but working cruise isn't really worth more than $50 or so to me (any more and I'll leave it broken!)

Question: Can I use an amp from any other W126 model as long as it had an automatic transmission? Will one from any gas model work also? I've located one from an '85 380SE.. would this work?

You need to know the parts numbers, which are stamped on your amp, of the units that will work.

There is probably more than one model number that will work, but if you can get the same number it will work for sure.

The only practical way to see if the amp is good is to stick it in the car. The actuator and a speedo relay can also cause problems, I understand.

It will cost more than $50 to fix this, as it requires rather expensive equipment and a considerable amount of a technician's time to get it to work,

Thomaspin on this forum has a description of a fix on his excellent website that might help.

Good luck!
