HELP with W201 euro headlight install!

Ok, guys, I'm gonna take the plunge. I'm gonna do it! I'm going to roll up my sleeves and muster all the confidence I can to install these euros on my 190E since I cannot find a place that can or will do it for me. I've been reading about this topic and have done searches. Now, can someone tell me what the "city lights" are that I have read about? It's not referring to the main driving lights, is it? I understand there is a wire for it. Is this an optional thing for this installation? Because if it is, I'd rather not do it (sounds complicated). Also, is it imperative that I unplug the battery first? (If yes, do I unplug the positive(+) first?) Based on the info I got, this is what I'm supposed to do:

1. unplug battery
2. remove blinkers via the "spinning wheel" screw
3. remove bottom trim with 8mm and remove L-shaped rubber piece
4. remove bottom screw
5. remove 2 top screws
6. unplug US-spec 4-pin plug

Do I have it right so far? Now, about the bulbs, I just received my Hella H4s (80/100) today. Yay! Do the H4 and H3 bulbs just plug in to the euro light sockets?

What scares me the most is transferring the wires from the 4-pin plug tp the 6-pin plug. Is it easy? Just how easy is doing a euro installation? So far everything sounds "easy." However, that's the problem, I'm afraid that I might run into something using a soldering iron or having to get a new part. Here are the tools and material I need to work on this job:

1. 8mm + extention
2. long flat-head screwdriver
Anything else, like duct tape or razor knife? Thanks guys! Wish me luck!

It is not a bad job at all

Hi There,

Do you have two new 6-prongs plugs?
Do you have a schematic or instruction how to transfer all those wire from the 4 prongs to the 6 prongs???.

If you don't have a schematic and know nothing about basic electrical, then you should find out which wire goes where and what?

You can find out which wire is for what function by turn them on one at a time and measure the voltages while the plug is out.
Good luck

I installed mine last year. Go to and click on the 190e in the lower left hand corner. Scroll down to Eurolights / HID and you will find step by step instructions along with photos.
Wires simply transfer to new 6 prong plug if I remember correctly.
The city lights connect to the parking lights - it's all there.
Good luck!

Does anyone know if I have to DISCONNECT the BATTERY when changing headlight units? Only one website said "disconnect battery." Other than that, in all the euro install instructions I've read, no one has ever mentioned it. If I don't have to, then I would rather not do it. Those who have changed their headlights to euros, did you disconnect the battery?

Is the 4-pin to 6-pin a "plug and play" procedure? Any soldering incolved? Thanks!

When taking out the headlights, there are two 8 mm nuts on the top but also one on the bottom, you have to wedge your socket extension between the bottom of the headlight and the bumper, helps if you have a flashlight.

You can do this without disconnecting the battery as there is no power going to those wires with the car off.

It is best to use a multi meter and test each one of your old wires so you know exactly its function, then you need to determine where in the euro plug these go.

thanks 2phast! hey, I've been to your site! Your 190E is awesome, and I just love what you have done to it. Wow, you know a lot! I won't disconnect the battery then. But I can't do my install this week because just earlier I was looking at the 6-pin connector and the bulbs and seeing how they fit into each unit. I'm having second thoughts about plugging in the generic blue-tinted "HID" look H3 bulb I got. For one, after reading up, I think the 100watt H3 is too high. I'm afraid it may cause some problems. In addition, the blue tint was flaking off at the tip! I'm gonna order standard H3s from Performance Products. Any watt recommendations????? I received my H4 (12V 80/100) from PP and was wondering how I secure it to the unit. THe H3 was straight forward; it was easily secured by the wire that locks into the 2 nooks. However, I was not able to secure the H4. I see that there is a similar wire that locks into a nook. But once the H4 is in place, the wire will not lock into the nook due to the odd shape of it. Am I supposed to force the wire down into the nook?

So, more questions!

1. What H3 wattage recommendation
2. How do I secure the H4 bulb?
3. Can I leave the city light socket empty?

Many thanks again!
