Brake Problem
 

I just completed removing the calipers for inspection and replacing the brake pads on all four corners on my 1996 S320. After completion I bled them starting with the right rear and working to the left front. Here's my problem!!!! no matter how much I bleed them I cannot get any pedal pressure. If I press the pedal completely to the floor and place the car in gear, I can press the accelerator and the car will move either forward or reverse....no braking to speak of. I am stumped.

Any suggestions?????

Did the master cylinder run dry at any time during the bleeding operation? If so, you'll need to bleed the master cylinder separately.

I made sure we kept the master cylinder topped off. I did the front brakes first and then bled them. Had a full pedal at that time. It was only after we did the rear brakes and started to bleed them that the problem surfaced.

A couple of ideas... (don't be insulted, I don't know what your level of expertise is)... Did you pump up the brakes to seat the pads? This should only take a few strokes. After all was done and everything was buttoned back up, did you check for fluid leakage after testing the brakes? Since you checked the front brakes after finishing them, your problem should be confined to the rear brakes.

You either have fluid leakage from an open source, or you still have air in the lines.

Since doing the rear the brake pedal will not actually pump up. After several pumps it is about 1" from the flooboard, when you open the bleed it goes down to the floor. We have checked and there are no leaks to be found. I have changed brakes (pads & shoes many times) including my 1990 SL. Never saw a problem like this. I've already flushed 1 quart of fluid thru the bleed process, guess I'll go for two then punt.
Thanks, and keep thinking, I might have done something stupid since it was the second brake job I did yesterday,first was a (89 GMC Jimmy) for a friend. He was lucky, this problem waited until I did the wife's car.

My guess would be the master cylinder is shot. This happened to me as I was pulling into a Target:eek:, consider yourself lucky.
