trunk opens without warning
 

I have a 1998 c 230 mercedes. I have been having problems with my trunk opening without any warning. It does this all the time. Someone sugested that my switch group around my gearshift was probably dirty. That is prbably the case due to spilling a drink on the gearshift area. I want to know how to get to the swich plate due to it being under the burl walnut that sits around the gear shift?
