Water pumps/ Water Pumps _ I just posted that I have replaced so many -- mostly on MBs -- My 88Mercedes SL needed one last year with 44K -- My Jag just had its replaced at 75K -- second one! - they paid under warr.

I have not replaced any on late model US autos. we have many of them in the sales fleet. Some with close to 200K

I just got rid of a 98 Honda 125K -- I thought the belt replacement was at 120K on that car? My sister works for me and it was her company car -- she has had two Honda's - I have to say that I did not find them to be trouble free. We replaced it with a select Lexus (her choice - I must admit a smooth car) Lexus does have a 120K belt replacement.

The theory on the pump replacement is to do it because you have it all out. This is not allways the case -- on some cars the belt can just be replaced -- much cheaper.

A few things I can say:

Get the belts (some have two in there!) from the dealer - they are not much more $$ and they will fit -- you want the same teeth-- some come as a kit!

I can not see how they know you need a new pump if the old one is not leaking - I also feel you would see something!

The belt has teeth on it - and will not be harmed by antifreez in any event.

Waterpumps are not lubed by the coolent I am not sure how this started -- they have sealed bearings and are trashed when they leak -- the weep hole in the pump is to warn you the main seal has failed!

Check the manual to see when it actually needs to be replaced -- I have had service people say things -- just to sell service!

If you are at a Honda dealer - the price they gave you is very good for the total service.

Yeldogt, I agree and disagree. I believe the mechanic was correct in telling duckmuck that the timing belt needed replacement together with the water pump, but for the wrong reason. It's a tough sell to tell someone he needs to replace a part that is still working and has no outward appearance of being worn. The mechanic told a little white lie to properly replace the belt.

Most people I've talked to agree that when one (water pump or timing belt) is replaced, so is the other. It's only prudent to replace the other part when everything is taken apart down to where you can get at the part..... especially on a Honda with 77,000 miles on the original parts. Both of these parts are wear items. I'd hate to replace one, only to have the other item go shortly after, and pay for labor to have all the same stuff taken apart again.

It's like replacing the head gasket at 150,000 miles, only to find you need the head reconditioned a year later.

Exclamation

thanx for the information guys...but just for clarification...the car has 77,000 KILOMETERS...NOT miles...I had a check in the manual and dealership regarding the service interval for the pump and timing belt...it seems the timing belt is to be replaced every 100,000km, and the pump is to be inspected at that time...anyhow, the work was completed this afternoon and I picked up the car...final cost of pump replacement, timing belt, and major service was $874CAD...that price was including taxes...

So, just to clarify, Total minus taxes is about $ 750.00 CDN = about $ 500.00 US.
Not too bad for all the items you had replaced/serviced.

Manny,

Lookin' at the bill, I had my "Type 3 service" done, which includes:

Replace engine oil and filter.
Service front and rear brakes.
Rotate tires, inspect for wear and adjust pressure.
Lubricate all hinges, locks, and latches with multipurpose grease.
Inspect tie rod ends, steering gear box and boots.
Inspect suspension components.
Inspect driveshaft boots.
Inspect parking brake adjustments.
Inspect brake hoses and lines (including ABS).
Check all fluid levels, condition of fluids, and check for leaks.
Inspect cooling system hoses and connections.
Inspect exhaust system.
Inspect fuel lines and connections.
Check all lights.
Inspect the underbody.

this Type 3 service was $181.16CAD...

then I had the water pump assembly and the timing belt replaced...the cost of the water pump was $156.29CAD, the belt was $80.95CAD, and the labour was $345.60CAD...

grand total was $764CAD before taxes...so around $545US...give or take a few dollars...other than replacing the ignition coil at around 66,000km which caused an erratic RPM gauge behaviour, this waterpump/timing belt incident was the only unexpected repair in the lifetime of the car...not a bad track record I suppose...well, better than the E420's which cost about 3x more

well put Kestas -- my point is that as an owner of a company with many many cars. I have been shocked at the things that service writers tell me and also things I hear them say to customers.

Some of it is because they do not know the actuall requirements of the specific model but other times it is just to add to the bill.

Like telling an older Lincoln owner that he should change his spark plugs at 30k before he drives to florida (at $120.00) an possibly all his belts and hoses - this on a 2001 car that they have not even looked at yet! Then he commented on the fuel filter!

also my thng with the timing belt is that some are much easier than others and do. Some do not require the pump to come out -- many time people are just told to "change the belt at 50k" -- when the belt is not to be change until 100k - the auto co's build in a hefty saftey margin.
