How does the vacuum modulator come out of the trans?
 

I need to replace the vacuum modulator on my 1990 190E 2.6. I was checking the gas and filling up with trans fluid every 75 miles. I pulled the vacuum line from the modulator and trans fluid came out of the line.
I don't know if you twist it and pull it out or what. Please help.

I don't know your car, but I did a search on "vacuum modulator removal" and there is a thread in the diesel group about a little plate that holds it in. In that case, you need to remove the holding plate (easy on the allen bolts) and then the unit pulls straight out. This seems to be the set-up of the 722.3 and 722.4 transmissions.

If your trans. is different, somebody will hopefully point out.

I could figure it out if I could see. I can't feel any clip up there surely can't see one. I don't want to pull the trans out but looks like I'm going to have to.

I was told that on my wife's car, 190e 87 16v, the trans needs to be lowered a bit to get at the module. Was told its a pain in the arse.

I have about a fingers width between the module and the trans tunnel!

The 201 chassis sure didn't give much room. There is a picture in this article: http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic20242.html that shows the modulator and the plate. Figure #5.

Its a pretty small picture but it might help. Lowering the trans will be necessary.
