300E - Question on removing water pump
On my '86 300E I'm in the process of replacing the fan clutch bearing bracket and the belt tensioner, so I've already got most of the stuff off the front of the engine. It seems like a good time to replace the water pump as I think it's still the original at 120k miles and I've got some detectable up and down play in the shaft.
My question is whether or not I have to pull off the intake manifold to reach the inboard upper and lower water pump bolts, or can I get at them with a long extension and/or wobbly. Also, does the new water pump come with any of the seals or gaskets needed? I know I also have to replace the metal pipe that runs transversely from the side of the pump, but do I also have to replace the lower radiator hose as listed in FastLane? I replaced this one about a year ago. Do they make more than one depending whether you're using the early or late water pump? Thanks, Gary |

First of all there is no reason to replace a perfectly good water pump just because some of the front is out of the way. I just replaced the original pump on my '88 300E at 250,000 miles.
That said, you do not have to pull the intake manifold, but you will need a universal joint with tape on it to keep it stiff to reach some of the bolts. Secondly there is absolutely no need to replace the pipe that goes across the front of the engine. You will, however, want to replace the soft hoses, especially the one that is about 1-1/2" in diameter between the pump and the head. Good luck, |

Mike - I'm still perusing the search thread - there's some good info there. (how come I can never get good threads like this when I search? What search criteria did you use?) Larry - I know I don't have to replace it, but the car's 17 years old, I have no significant history on the car, and my experience tells me that even though the pump could last another 120k miles, it could also last only another 120 mi. I'd rather have the peace of mind of knowing there's a new pump in there when I'm 500 miles from home and 100 miles from the nearest repair facility when I'm on one of the 14 hr. Monte Carlo style rallies my wife and I like to take the car on a few times a year. These are often run at night, on deserted back roads (and someitmes desert roads, as in Death Valley), often at speeds in the vicinity of 100 mph, and I'd hate being stuck at 3am in the middle of nowhere with steam pouring out from under my hood! So, each time I find something wrong I fix it as soon as I can, as well as anything that appears like it could fail soon. Just seems like cheap insurance in the long run. In regards to the transverse pipe coming off the side of the pump, all the parts sources appear to indicate that the pipe needs to be updated to fit the new pump. It does appear that the newer pipe attaches to the pump with a 6mm bolt through a flange, where the old pipe was just a slip fit with an O-ring. Are the diameter of the old and new pipe the same where it fits into the pump? Gary |

When I search for something I do the following: - Click in upper right hand corner on SEARCH - At next screen, I keyed in WATER PUMP in the ShopForum Search Engine. The upper case used for WATER PUMP is not needed. - Click on "Search Titles Only" towards the bottom. This will limit the search to just those with WATER PUMP in the title. Limiting the search to "titles only" works for some issues.

Thanks Mike, that helps a lot. I hadn't really paid much attention to that. I guess I need to slow down a little and look at things closer.
