transmission removal
 

I am going to remove the transmissiom on my Euro 86 500SE next week and replace the leaking front seal I will also do rear seal and new mounts while it's out. I put a new pan on it last week and that solved it's leaking problem but now can see the front seal is leaking bad.

I have removed and installed many American AT's as well as quiet a few ricearoanies. Any hints on this job on the 126 will be helpfull.Any special tools needed to do do seal or tricky bolts.

This transmission has a goodly pause engaging reverse compared to my 81 SD so will probably need a rebuild in future,but would like to strecth it's life out as long as I can as have other projects ,would a better quality AT fluid like REd Line help???

William, you may have to "lower" the rear of the engine/tranny to get to the upper most fasteners. Use a long extension and it will probably need some type of "wobble" attachment. Don't forget to drain the torque converter prior to removing it and make sure you get the car up high enough to allow the tranny to be brought out from under the car.

Since you have done many american trannys, taking it out should not be much of a problem. One thing you mentioned caught my eye. The slow engaging reverse is your front reverse clutch drum frictions wearing out, and the leak may be the old style front pump. While you have it out to reseal you should pull the front clutch pack out and replace the frictions and also replace the front pump with the updated style. These are two critical issues with these trannys. Good luck!
