My 1980 240D ran out of fuel. I put in a couple gallons of diesel and manually pumped the fuel pump. At first, the engine turned over, but immediately died. Now, the engine won't turn over.

You will have to pump while someone starts the engine. Once running, tighten the cap down. If the cap leaks, you will have to replace the hand pump. They tend to fail when not used.

We have them in the partsshop.

Follow Benzmac's recommendation.

And if your engine won't turn over, check the following:
1) battery connections, power and ground cables
2) check your battery
3) check starter

Don't forget the little things like parking on level ground so that the small amount of fuel in the tank can cover the intake point. Had this happen to me once (actually, the kids did it), and pumped so much air into the system that I had to loosen an injector line before cranking and hand-pumping would start the engine. Seemed to prime much better with just one injector line slightly loosened.
