Have a 1987 124 250D Euro (manual transmission).

I notice a rattling sound during idling but it stops when I press on the clutch. When I let go of the clutch, it comes back again.

What could this be? Release bearing? Is this easy to replace? I have the 124 service manual CD-ROM and can't find any tips about tranny repairs.

THANKS!

francis,

My 300E 5 Speed and my 240D 4 Speed both do this. I assume that when the throw out bearing is not pressed against the pressure plate fingers it is hanging loose and free to rattle.

I have experienced no ill effects from this.

Good luck,

There should not be a rattle. Check the return spring, it should keep the fork and bearing from vibrating.

How do I check the spring? Do I have to bring down the tranny?

Thanks!

This is probably a throwout bearing that's on it's way to failing. You should put the car in the air and look for the captive end of the return spring near the clutch fork. Give it a little wiggle, if you don't detect any excessive motion, then the spring is in place. It's rare for this piece to fall out, but they can lose their tension.

Is this in the CD-ROM manual? Can't seem to find it.

Where is the clutch fork near? It it beside the tranny? Do I have to remove hte tranny from the engine?

Thanks!

Francis, I believe you have a hydraulic clutch setup, in which case the fork, spring bearing are all inside the bellhousing. You may be able to unbolt the clutch slave cylinder from the bellhousing and remove the cylinder and push gently on the fork with the end of a pencil. There should not be excessive movement. I can't tell you if the slave cylinder has any adjustment, but hopefully this will get you headed in the right direction
