89 420 SEL Warning Lights
 

The following warning lights came on when the car was started and did not go off, Battery, Brake, Brake pad wear, Engine oil, Coolant level, Exterior light, ABS malfunction and the low gas warning light. The car seems to run OK. I drove it home, about 12 miles last night. When I started it this morning it seemed to be idling a little fast, 8000rpms. Check engine light is not on. OVP fuse is most likely blown or OVP relay may be defective

Thanks, thought it was most likely a fuse. My manual describes the Overload Protection Relay as being to the right of the brake booster. I know where the brake booster is and to the right is the main fuse box and behind the main fuse box towards the firewall is a small black box with a multude of wires running in and out. Where exactly is the OVP Relay and the OVP fuse. The fuse is not identified in my manual. Thanks very much for your help. Ken

Think I found the OVP relay. It has a 10A fuse inside. It is to the right of the brake booster if you are seated in the driver's seat. The 10A fuse is fine if i have the right relay. Any other suggestions? TIA Ken

Get that 8000rpm idle sorted out right away! ;)

My money's on a bad voltage regulator. Check FastLane. Inexpensive part, easy to replace. Check also Thomaspin's website for DIY guidance.

Thanks Sixto, You got me looking at the voltage side. The fan belt to the alternator is missing. Hope that is the problem. Can't get it into the shop until Wednesday morning. Wife is taking the other car for the weekend. Any suggestions on how much if any day light driving I can do or any temp fixes until then. TIA Ken

Hi Ken,

some years ago (like 30), stockings or panty hoses were used to make a belt, if you were stranded on the road...
The material is quite strong when you twist it up. A good tight knot and the loose ends cut of with a razor. If you have to drive to the mechanic, thats what I would use.

I'd say only drive to your tech and only if the shop is really close. Call MB roadside assistance and ask what they'll charge to fix it. The number should be on the inside of your glovebox door. Besides, you don't know where you'll be when the battery doesn't have enough juice to start the car. Beyond a certain depth of discharge a lead-acid battery will not recover.

Check the auto parts store for the kind of emercency belt that doesn't come as a closed loop. Seems like it's as much work to install such a belt as a real belt, though.
