Question Has anyone installed front headrests in the back of their W124 wagon?

I need to replace two of my rear headrests on my 94 wagon and I was thinking it might be nice to use front headrests that rotate forward for better visability. Any ideas?

The rear headrest on your W124 don't lean forward? I have an '87 TD and the rear headrest can be tilited forward. I don't know what is involved in removing the froont headrest. On my '83 TD you just lift and push a small button in the seatback, to release it. With the front headrest in the W124s being powered, I would know how to remove them.

Nope, the rear headrests are smaller than the fronts and they do not rotate forward.

I think the rear headrests were deliberately locked upright in the 7 seat versions as they also serve as headrests (or more accurately, head restraints) for the third row seats.

A strange Australian design rule around the time of our cars meant that the front headrests in both our 300TE and the 190E were also locked in the upright position. Models delivered here from about '93 onwards allowed the headrests to tilt forward as in other markets. Fortunately, with a bit of poking around in the bottom of the headrests it is possible to remove the metal clip that was added to prevent them tilting.

I had considered checking to see if the rear headrests in the wagon used the same clip although decided for safety reasons to leave them locked upright since we do occasionally use the third row seats.

Yes, the rear wagon headrests are locked in the upright position when the car is fitted with the third rear-facing seat. The headrests serve as head restraints for both, middle seat and rear-facing seat passengers.

The front and rear head rests are NOT interchangeable. They use different locking mechanisms and.

I guess the only way you will find a rear headrest that moves in an angle will be fitting the model from wagon that does not have the third seat.

I find that odd. My recently departed 89 and newly acquired 95 both have the third row seat, and both had rotating headrests in the middle row. The 95's however, don't seem to pivot as much as the 89's did.

Here's a pic of my 95 hopefully showing the slight difference between the two extremes.

I tried my rear headrests this weekend and they do pivot some! Now, I just need to find some grey headrests that fit to replace by two that are coming apart

When I said they are locked upright I meant that they do not have the range of movement of headrests that are not locked. The locking mechanism obviously still allows a small amount of movement. Ours probably move that amount as well. The point of the "locked" headrests is such that in a collision the third row seat occupants have some form of head restraint.
