Just wanted to know if there are any specific maintenance jobs that I should be doing on my power steering other than changing the fluid and the belt.

I'm not sure if my model has a filter, and there is only a slight leak, in which I changed the hose from the reservoir to the pump.

I'm getting some inconsistencies with how stiff or loose the steering is and I'm wondering if there's something I'm neglecting with regards to the steering apparatus.

I currently use synthetic ATF in it as well.

Please give me your thoughts...

follow my advice if you want your power steering to have, power.

don't turn the steering wheel all the way from one end to the other, leave just a bit of room as to not reach either directions locking point when steering tight turns. basically, pay attention to the position your steering wheel is in and memorize it.

and second, don't turn the wheels in a fully stopped position, always have some movement, either reverse or forward. if you've driven a car without power steering you'll know why.

these things will assure you that the steering mechanism won't just point the middle finger at you some day and decide to break something.

oh, and i duno the answer to your question, i'm just giving you advice since you're my very very very very very veeeeeeeery good friend.

Almost every Mercedes in recent history has a power steering filter. Check with your dealer or supplier, such as FastLane.

There have been multiple discussions on this forum regarding which fluid to use in power steering units. Some of the more respected members advise against using ATF. According to them, yes, it is a hydraulic fluid but it has additives that are not beneficial to your power steering system.

They recommend either the Mercedes power steering fluid or regular everyday over-the-counter variety.

I believe if you do a search using: Larry Bible and Power Steering you will find his numerous comments.

It would be a good time when replacing the filter to also flush the system until the fluid returns close to its original condition and color.

Thanks, guys. Still haven't changed the fluid as yet, but there's some updates as to my steering issues. I still have a pull to the left (pretty bad) when driving down the road, and when breaking. I had all my stering links checked and the alignment was fine as well.

My mechanic found that there was some play in the front right wheel bearing, so this might have caused the play in the steering that I was complaining about, but since he tightened the bearing, the steering feels stiffer than ever. (maybe it was always supposed to be like this and I just got used to it being quite loose!)

So I will check the fluid change and see what it does, and I will give the front left break caliper a look over too. (I've had issues with my calipers since buying this car)
