'86 300E Aux. Cooling Fan Question

Just wondering - should my aux. cooling fan come on immediately when I switch on the A/C, or only when the coolant temp or A/C pressure rises high enough to trigger it? Right now, it's not acting any differently than it does when the A/C is off; when the coolant temp reaches about 110 it comes on and cycles off when the temp gets down to about 100.

Also, is this fan supposed to have only one speed? I've read where some people refer to their fan coming on at low speed first, then a higher speed when it reaches a higher temp. Mine is a single, large fan, not the two smaller ones.

Thanks,

Gary
