Steering schimy at 60 mph and above
 

I have a 92 190E 2.6 and the streeing starts to schimmy and vibrate at 60 and above.

Bought a new steering damper, but havent put it on yet.

Do you think this will solve my problem?

Yes.

It would be best to have your tires balanced correctly as well.

I doubt it. I wouldn't expect enough wear on a '92 damper to 'cause' the shimmy. Although a new one might mask it a bit, I'd be surprised if you are happy with the result. Since you have it, though, it should be a fast, easy swapout.

I vote no.
Steering dampener masks underlying problems with play in steering to some extent. Does help with 'bump steer'.

Suggest checking steering linkages for play. Idler Arm bushings too.

If no play, try swapping tires front to rear, and see if there is any change. This would indicate imbalance, or tire/wheel damage.

Several things can cause shimmy at that speed.

Wheels out of balance (by far the cheapest solution if it is indeed the problem).

Old tires with tread seperation issues (usually accompanied by premature inner tread wear).

Tires that are out of spec with factory requirements for the OEM rims (usually a too wide tire will cause this)

Worn control arm bushings or ball joint wear (not unusual for a car your age with a healthy amount of mileage).

If you rims are not OEM, some are manufactured with defects such as eccentric hubs (and corresponding bolt holes). While the wheel may look fine statically, even a minute tolerance offset will manifest itself at high speeds.

As already suggested, swap the front sets with the rear to see if the problem goes away. Then try a DYNAMIC wheel balance next.
