How to remove A/C blower squirrel cage from motor??
 

Hi all,
I'm a newbe here but have searched this forum many times in the past. Great site!

I have a 1993 300E with a noisy A/C blower motor. The bearing are shot and the motor needs to be replaced or rebuilt. If I could get the squirrel cage blades off the motor I think I could either replace just the motor at 1/2 the cost of motor with blades or replace just the bearings in the motor.

It looks like the blades are on the shaft really tight.. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get them off without damaging them? Heat the shaft?

Had the same issue when I changed the blower motor in my S500... the squirrel cage fan was stuck solid to the motor shaft.
Don't know about your E class, but the one on my S was some sort of plastic making it really important to be very careful.
Worse, I had some corrosion of the shaft ... I suspect you do also.
Anyway, the key was patience.... a few drops of penetrating oil every hour.... and then GENTLE heating of the hub with a hair dryer, letting it cool, heat, cool until finally I could see the oil go into the hub.
Then, I took a small, round drift/punch and simply tapped the motor shaft out of the fan hub.
Worked like a champ.

I agree with Ken.
However realize that this set up is good if you are NOT reusing your electric blower motor. I did this on the 65 Mustang and the bearings were destroyed by the pounding on the shaft. So if your replacing the motor a slow and steady method of penetrating oil and time will work. If you are saving the motor for reuse, you have to set up some kind of puller, like a 3 jaw puller.
