Posts: 10,626 has removable stars for sale, approximately $30, at least it was listed on sale in their last mailer.

As for "booby trapping" the car . . . in virtually every jurisdicition in the the US, you will be held responsible for the bodily injury caused by your trap. The use of potentially life threatening force is never justified in a property crime, except the classic definition of burglary, which involves home invasion at night.

Remember, it's just a car, just a part, versus somebody's hand or other body parts. Imagine explaing to a jury that you were just protecting your MERCEDES BENZ's hood ornament by causing permanent injury to a juvenile . . . or even just a passerby or child. Unless you get a jury full of MB owners, you're cooked!

In fact I polished the star with a Dremel tool and one of those smal cylindrical white rubber tools with green metal polishing paste on it. Concentrating on the edges at the underside (carefully !) gives you quickly two honed bevels and one nice edge.

Thanks Danny, never thought of a Dremel tool. I pictured myself using a file and inevitably scratching the hood.

MTI makes a good point - I think I'll reconsider my desire to booby trap the star. I can remember doing some pretty stupid things myself in my younger, more misguided days, and it's not worth severing some idiot kid's tendon just to protect a $25 part. Even worse, what about a tech or the innocent guy at the shop shining it up for me before returning it?

I just lost #2 exactly two weeks after the last one. I have seen some mention of the removable star. Is this a reality? I have just searched in vain and can't find it. let me know where to look. I don't want to become the source for the local star theft club.
