1985 380SL Timing Chain Noise Question?
I have a 1985 380SL with 105K miles on it. The timing chain tensioner was replaced at 75K miles and the timing chain and tensioner (again) was replaced at 80K miles.
Now there is a noise that sounds like a loose timing chain sometimes, but not all the time, on a cold startup. I never hear the noise on warm startups. What should I be looking for to cure this? Is it easy to inspect the timing chain rails for damage? Thank you

ez, It's normal.
It is normal for the chain to chatter on start up because the oil in the tensioner bleeds off. The new systems hold fluid to avoid this.
You can practically change the rails for what it takes to inspect them. Chains are good for 100,000 miles or more, sometimes a lot more. The rails get brittle with age and if the engine overheats. The chain stretch can be measured and offset keyways installed to correct timing. I can't imagine why you would have a problem in 20,000 miles.

Thanks for the encouraging reply! This is the first time I have read your explanation anywhere, all the other post I've read say "if the chain is noisy replace it", well I have replaced it and it's still noisy. Would the mechanic who replaced the chain been able to easily see the rails? As far as I know this motor has never overheated. How hard is it to inspect the chain again for stretch? I sure don't want to damage this motor which seems near perfect now. Thank you.

Normally, the rails are chainged with the chain. Ask your mechanic if he changed them. You shouldn't have to check very often. It is an expensive proposition to check the chain stretch. Ask your mechanic for a price. It requires pulling the valve covers and 2 hyd lifters. then a solid "lifter" goes in and the #1 intake valve is taken to 2 degrees of lift and then the position of the crankshaft is noted. This is done on the #6 cyl as well. There is more...
I wouldn't check for 20,000 miles then 30,000 miles thereafter. and monitor the strech. It really lasts. Try not to worry about it.
