I just got a 1979 240d with 190K on it and checked the valve clearances. They were .00mm intake and .20 exhaust. I adjusted them to .10 and .30 respectively. Now when I open the oil cap with the engine running hot air and smoke comes flying out. Is this normal?
Also if the oil cooler where taken out by means of cutting and clamping the lines what effect would this have on the car? |

I would not take out the oil cooler.
The little bit of blow by you see is normal. Just monitor the oil consumption, if it is less than a quart every 1,500, you are fine. ------------------ Benzmac: Donnie Drummonds 1992 500E (very soon I hope 1981 280GE SWB ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO TECHNICIAN SERVICE MANAGER FOR 14 BAY FACILITY MERCEDES SPECIALIST 8 YRS PARTNER IN MERCEDESSHOP.COM |

I got it with the oil cooler already bypassed and now was wondering what effect this has and was it the oil doing without that path available to it. Thanks.
