Oh no...PLEASE don't tell me it's the tranny!!!

'92 400E. ~120K miles

The shifter bushings have been out for a while. But yesterday I went to put the car in Reverse and it rolled back a few feet and locked up. I gave it a little gas and it went a little but it was like I was power braking. Sometimes it will roll a foot back and just lock up completely. Foreward gears seem to be late to upshift and shift only at high RPM. Sometimes the tranny wont downshift at a light and will start off in 3rd or 2nd. All this happened yesterday. I changed the shift bushings today thinking that could be the problem but it wasn't. I'm freaking out. Sound like the tranny?

Thanks...Peter

Don't freak out over something like this.

When was the last time the fluid/filter were changed? What condition does the fluid on the dipstick look like?

Ok....Dropped the pan. Metal debris and what appears to be some small chewed up c-clamps. Changed the fluid. Same symptoms. My question now is...do I get it rebuilt or look for a used. What can I expect to pay?

Thanks lots...Peter

Call different dealers throughout the country for the price of a Mercedes-Benz rebuilt transmission.. Warranty, and as much as people like to diss Mercedes there transmission rebuild program is a very worthwhile service.

Ethan is offering good advice. The MB rebuilds are good with good warranties, honored at any authorized dealership.

Another source is: Sun Valley Hydraulics

Also check with FastLane (this site) for recommendations, they are very helpful and good people to deal with.
