w140 shiftknob changeout - How is it done?
 

Hello,

Want to upgrade my OEM leather shiftknob to all wood handle version on my 140 series.

Can this be done without having to remove the engine... just kidding.

The wood center console is two pieces. Can this be done without having to remove the top (radio) piece and by only having to remove the bottom piece where the shifter is located? And.... how is it done.

I changed one on a 124 series which was simple, don't have a clue as to how to change this one.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

Selector lever

Remove and install by moving lever to position "D". Tap selector lever with the palm of the hand while turning it clockwise through 90°and then pull up.

I think that's the process through 95 or 96. Later models have a set screw or something like that.

140 is???

On some, it's a bugger! My '94 model is spring loaded and uses a 'c-clip' as the capture mechanism. It's extremely difficult to get pressure on the shifter (ie push down) while simultaneously spreading the c-clip and inserting it back into the mechanism.

I think on later models it simply unscrews once you release the capture nut. Very straight-forward. But the picture above could be correct. Not sure for later models.

But in all cases, you must release the 'bezel' (has clips on side and back) before gaining acess to shifter. Check my web page (click 'www' icon below) and select MENU #23. These is lots of picture showing how.
