So - on an 82 240D - is there any way air can get to the fuel pump other than coming in via the fuel line? I was wondering about the altitude compensator. If that failed could it let in air?
I may be barking up the entirely wrong tree here. But for some reason I do keep getting air in the fuel pump. Makes the car hard or impossible to start one hour after it sits hot. Starts but runs rough cold.
Any ideas much appreciated.
Harvey

If you have disturbed any of the fuel filters or the hand primer lately, that is your problem. I have never seen anything else cause this. Did you replace the o-rings on the banjo bolt that holds in the main filter?

I am not knowledgable on the 240D but I have seen flexible fuel lines crack so that the fuel pump sucks in both air and fuel. If this car has the flexible line from the tank to the pump, it might be worth a look.
