Backfiring and Loss of Power after Repair

I recently had my hood and headlamp replaced due to a fender bender... when i got my car back i noticed some backfiring at take off.

I went back to the body shop and they said they didnt touch the engine, so i think when they washed my car then got water in it. If so would a bad plug or something cause this?

its a 1996 C280... i have no check engine light or anything... just a popping noise when i give it gas at idle.

Any help would be appreciated. Also if it is a bad plug or something like i suspect, then is there a way to determine which one has gone bad b/c i just recently replaced them or would i have to replce them all?

Don't be so sure. They sometime like to mess with the car just for the heck of it. I've had some bad experiences with autobody shops. Check all your connections. sometimes they take away the sensor plugs and never put them back.
Let's hope that's not the case but it won't hurt to double check.
good luck !

A common cause of a backfire is timing or plug preignition, I agree with Benz300, that 'they' will screw with a car just cause its a Benz, and to get you back to a repair shop, check the plug wires to see if they switched one or two around.

i checked the plug wires and sure enough 2 of them had been swapped... its supposed to go 1-6, 3-4, 2-5. It was set up as 1-6, 2-4, 3-5.... but also i noticed a white tube/wire which was lacking a destination... i have posted a pic for reference. I couldn't find where it goes... any help would be appreciated.

Company firewall wont let it through. Can you describe again what this wire or tube comes from& goes to? Are you still having drivability problems?

babtahi 10-01-2003 04:20 PM

ok i found out where the wire goes and put it back... still have rough idle and also noticed a little water coming out of the exhaust.... the problems i am having are rough idle adn come backfiring... i just had the plugs replaced less than 3000 miles ago so i dont think its that... i think they may have gotten water somewhere when they washed teh car

babtahi 10-01-2003 04:25 PM

ok just test drove the car and still have backfiring and really rough idling... i am pretty sure one of the plugs or coils is the culprit b/c i also had teh air mass sensor replaced recently too. i think the water popped one of the plugs... if so would it be easy to spot which one it is so i only have to change one and what types of tools would i need. I am sort of new at this but pretty handy. wouldn't it most likely be one of the plugs in the 3 wells on the engine. also where is this water from teh exhaust coming from b/c as i looked at the engine and where the plugs and every are it seems pretty dry...

babtahi 10-01-2003 06:23 PM

here is something else i noticed... plug number 5 on the top of the engine is white but has a 2cm yellowish ring around the bottom part of the plug where it should be white... none of the other plugs had this and this is also part of the area i found some traces of water... could this plug be the culprit?

babtahi,
surely enough it seems that the body shop did more than just 'body repair'. I've been in this situation a couple of times and it makes me really really mad. And at times I've gone back and yelled at the shop as well. but as we all know, they totally deny that they even touched anything but the body panels etc. So no use doing that. Given your car is a 96 and probably out of warrranty, I would still suggest that you take it to the dealer just for a checkup and have them figure out exactly what's going on. And if the body work you had done was part of an insurance claim then you can have the dealer bill with the repairs attached to the total claim since it was partly the body shop's doing.
good luck.

i went to a local autozone and he said all the plugs looked fine to him and showed no signs of misfiring... so now i am back to square one i guess unless its one of the coils... the one in the middle looked a little blue when i pulled it off the plug.

any help would be appreciated, i am really tired of taking it to a mechanic and being ripped off
