Which Transmission Is It?
I am looking at a 96 E320 tomorrow; I know it has the 104 motor but not sure of the transmission. Do all 210s use the "electronic" 5 speed or did 96 E320s use the old 4 speed transmission?
Thanks for the help! Cheers |

Some 210.055 cars had either trans. Only a 96 would have the 722.3 tranny but some 96's had the 722.6 tranny.
Post the chassis number and the data card will tell which one it has.

If it has the "W" "S" switch on the shifter, it's a 722.6. I believe that 96 210's all had the 722.3, except the E420. Oh wait, the e420 was only in 97, so never mind on that. The earlier 210 Diesels (non turbo) used a 722.4 though.

From another thread I contributed to:
OK, here's the info on when the 722.6 was introduced:
*from 03/95 in the C140 with engine M120 (S600 Coupe) *from 09/95 in the W/V 140 with engines M119 and M120 (S500 and S600 sedans, long and short wheelbase) *from 09/95 in the R129 with engines M119 and M120 (SL500 and SL600) *from 01/96 in the W210 with engine M119 (E420) *from 08/96 for all MB passenger cars with 4,5, or 6 cylinder engines. Thank you all for the fast response - I've had good luck with two prior 722.3 transmissions, so this is good news. I'll let you know what I think of the car later.
