W210 SRS light on
3 weeks ago, I had to tighten the steering column switch assembly.
Everything went fine and I had disconnected the battery. The SRS light did not come on when I restarted the car, and I had no problems until today -- maybe a coincidence. What is the likely cause of the malfunction. Do the contacts to the airbag, and in particular the rotating assembly in the steering wheel, go bad? Is there any way to reset the SRS without going to the dealer or a place that has the Star Diagnostic software? Thanks

Anyplace that thinks they work on MBs should have a scanner capable of reseting the SRS light.

More than likely related to the work that was done. If it's a coincidence, then the 2 most common problems is a seat belt buckle switch or the contact spiral (clock spring) in the steering column. Possibly just the drivers airbag wasn't fully snapped in?

I double checked the contact (snap in) behind the airbag, it is securely in.
Clearly, however, the contact spiral was displaced as part of the repair, so if it was weak to start with, maybe it is now broken. Will the codes actually reveal which component is at fault -- ie belt buckle vs. contact spiral? Thanks.

Yes, the code is a direct reference to why the SRS light is on.

Question: If it is the seatbelt that is causing the SRS light to stay on, would you also get the seatbelt light to go on and stay on -- or is the seatbelt light checking something else?

On his 210 chassis, I blieve it is a different contact for the seatbelt light itself, I'd have to check. On your 107 I don't believe there is a switch in the buckle at all, or if there is it would onlt be for the warning light.

thank you for the quick response - the owners' manual (which I happen to have a copy of with me) -- says, with respect to the SRS indicator lamp, that "the following system components are monitored or undergo a self-check: crash-sensors, air bag ignition circuit, driver and front passenger seat belt buckles."
In my 107 the SRS light is always lit, but the seat belt light functions nominally -- is this an indication that the problem in the SRS system is not in the buckles? thanks

On an 86 there shouldn't be any seatbelt buckle switches for the airbag. Starting in 1988 there would be a pair of seatbelt buckle switches for the airbag and a seperate one in the drivers buckle for the seatbelt warning light. Possibly you have a newer owners manual?
In any event, on your car the most common cause for trouble is the contacts in the upper steering jacket for the airbag. They are sort of like the contacts for the horn, and they wear out like brushes in an electric motor. Gilly |

Thanks -- I'll take a look and ask my indy to replace those contacts.

Just curious, do you have the wrong owners manual or what? Gilly |

I checked the back cover and it does have a 1988 date -- I think I picked this one up with a plastic folder having all of the other glove box materials usually found in a 560sl, but, alas, lacking in mine -- I have another manual (the reprint available from MB, which the dealership I bought the car from ordered for me) that is in the car, and keep the '88 at the office for reference. It did not occur to me that there was such a differnce between any of the 560sl's. I always had the impression that the 560sl was a stop gap between the 107 and 129 models -- since it seems that all of the other models were getting "modernized" around 1986.
