How hard is to repair a 83 240D Manual Transmission?
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/snow7ice/BENZ.html
I have rebuilt a lot of engines, but no transmissions. I have no training either. But I am having trouble locating an 83 Manual trasnmission here in South Jersey. I cant downshift from 4th to 3rd. I think I have a busted Synchro. My biggest problem I think would be 1) Documentation 2) Parts 3 Special tools Anybody got any input? How hard is to repair a 83 240D Manual Transmission? |
As manual trannies go it is a piece of cake. Very little is needed in the way of special tools.

If you decide to proceed, please take pictures and post here (or maybe in the diesel forum).

Curious, what kind of transmission oil are you running in the gear box. I had an 82 240D that had a lot of trouble with 2nd gear. I removed the PO's ATF and put in manual trans oil. I never had trouble with it afterwards. Haasman |
You have a point---
I stuck ATF in it, I'll drain it and try again.........

Cindarella shifts perfectly, up and down. For maintenance I need to change out the transmission oil/fluid before she goes back on the road.
Haasman, what kind of manual transmission oil did you use? How would agricultural Hydro-Trans oil work? Tractors use this for both the hydraulic power system and to lubricate their transmission gears. :) Ken300D |

I can't recall what manual trans oil I used, too long ago. My bet is whatever weight oil the manual called for. It came up because I was considering buying it (the 79 240D) and a tech said that he'd driven it and that it snicked 2nd gear, that someone probably put ATF in the box. I was a bit amazed. Right then and there he pulled it on his lift, changed the the trans oil and it shifted perfectly for over 150k miles. Haasman |
