Stephen:

I've been bringing my 1986 2.3-16V to ******** Los Gatos (in Los Gatos, obviously ). They are VERY trustworthy and ONLY work on Mercedes. You can contact Tony (owner) or Al at 408-370-2612. Check out their website at I've also heard Park Avenue Motors in Palo Alto is pretty reputable (MBZ sales and service).

Good luck!

Brian

I bought one car from and have both of ours serviced by Mercedes Centre in Santa Cruz. Phone number is 831-462-4624. Owners name is Herbert Eder, a German guy who I am told is a Master Mechanic trained at the MBZ factory. His son Max is the parts manager.

Nice people, good work. Let them know that I sent you.

Park Ave motors is very reputable, but you pay and pay and pay and pay for service there (I think labor is north of $100/hr now).

Bought my car there, but I take it to Auto Haus Los Gatos now - Herr Schwager is great and their labor is a *bit more reasonable* (boy that was hard to type) at $80/hr.

I'd call them and ask for a referral to the SF location - you probably don't want to commute all the way down here and there HAS to be a good tech in the city, Oakland or Berkeley (easy BART access).

MB Doc and Steve: NO good MB techs (though lots of MBs) on Maui or Oahu - after all these years no less. Getting tired of the south yet?

Actually I really like the South as viewed through a University town. Gainesville always fairs high on the list of most livable cities.

On the other hand I really like the water and Gainesville is about 70miles from both the Gulf and the Atlantic. I really have thought of moving further south (as in Carribean) as it does get too cold here in G-ville during the Winter (bg).

I was recommended by a long time BMW owner to try Motorspeed West in Santa Clara, close to San Josae airport. I found Bill and Ken Clark to be very informative and helpful even over the telephone. I had them change my oil cooler lines ( charge of 1.5 hours vs MBZ 4 ) plus oil filter housing and pan gasket +1 hour. They didn't mind that I turned up with all the parts ( ordered through MercedesShop ). Only thing is they are always very busy so it can take up to a week to get the car into the shop.

I also received great advice on fixing my broken radiator hose spout. Use 1 1/8" Al or stainless steel pipe as a sleeve and a lot of epoxy. I used Devcon Plastic Steel as it was rated to 250F and is waterproof. Many epoxies loose their strenght at higher temperatures. They did also recommend getting the tanks renewd if the plastic was deterioting. But that is in next months repair budget.
