Help! - 230TE (1987) cold-start/idle/economiser system (4 speed auto )
 
:confused: My tech and I have completed a recent head job on the 230TE (W124 chassis, M102 engine) and we have a SPRING we cannot seem to re-locate. We know it connects to a bracket where the manifold support meets the block, but what does it connect to up top in the fuel system??:confused:
Since doing the head job and not relocating the spring, cold start is difficult and idle is lumpy, the 'economy' setting on the AUTO box doesn't work neither does kick-down and half-throttle cause the engine to die - which makes it difficult to hold speed.
ANY IDEAS?? Is it all down to this spring - if so - WHERE DOES IT GO??? :eek:

UPDATE
 
O.K. guys - some of the problems listed were not to do with the spring, but to do with the Merc being parked up with the head off for 4 months. The E<>S switch on the Auto transmission console must have got dirt on the contacts as did the 'kick-down' - so I now have full operation of both standard mode and economy mode with operational kick-down.

However, cold - start is still not operating and I have the 'no throttle' effect at half-throttle or levelling off once speed is reached - I assume this must be due to this spring.

I am waiting for the Techie to bring round the spring and I will upload a picture of it (alongside a ruler for size etc.)

Thanks for looking and commenting, any help is greatly appreciated.;)

Here's a photo of the spring, it is about 4" / 10cm long in relaxed state, a ring at one end and a looped hook at the other.

Would really appreciate knowing what under or alongside the fuel injection distributor/throttle unit it goes to. (One end goes onto a lug on the manifold support strut).

I think the spring to which you refer is your throttle return spring, my car is an 81 W123 230TE 102 engine, with injection. The spring goes from the throttle pivot arm to the bracket supporting the inlet manifold. Unless your's has somthing extra like cruise control which mine doesn't.But from what you say about the uneven running I should check out your throttle.

:D That sounds about right, it is the ONLY place that has a hole that hasn't got something attached! We worked out that the throttle appearing to 'die' was because by the time I have lifted off enough to hold speed, the pedal is almost at rest, but the throttle 'delays' in return and then appears to 'cut'.

I'm going to see if the spring makes the difference...... watch this space...;)

No it isn't the throttle return spring, that's in place and goes to a small lug under the air cleaner.
My elusive spring connects UNDERNEATH the fuel injection system somewhere, it's 'ring' end connects to the 'leg' of the manifold support bracket - - - - WHERE DOES THE OTHER END GO! There are no pictures in any manual, and we can't see how it could go to any operating part of the throttle as everything else is in the way...........
GUYS - I NEED YOUR HELP!!:confused:
Can anyone show a PIC of this spring IN PLACE?;)

See my comment above - the elusive spring isn't the throttle linkage return spring - Here is the throttle linkage, with its return spring in situ, the body of that spring is longer than the elusive spring>>>>HELP!:(
Anyone wishing to upload a pic of the questionable spring may have to take the shot from UNDER the vehicle..:confused:

:( Please, please look under your inlet manifold - humour me - see if there is a spring at 45-60 degrees angle - and if YES - what's it connected to?

C'mon, someone must have a 230TE out there that's prepared to look under the bonnet for me...........:D

I haven't looked under our hood, and don't want to take off the air cleaner in case our 190E 2.3 might be similar, but note that the linkage you show is only the upper part. The throttle shaft is lower down, and I would expect that part of the linkage to also have a return spring. Look at the actual throttle body butterfly shaft, and see if the spring is missing from that.

:p Thanks everyone - this was the throttle linkage spring - I had to fiddle about a bit deep under the single-point injection unit, but could just feel the end of a lever, with a hole in it! Connected the spring and throttle function was correct.
