Window Tint

Hi,

I own a 1995 C280 with orignal tint on the rear windows and quarters and rear window. I am assuming the tint is up to almost 5 years old and its the very dark kind. Is it possible to remove the tint myself? I did the front windows, but used fine steel wool to remove the residue and ended up scratching the glass with very fine scratches. Would products do I need to do an A job on removing it. Also, can the tint be removed on the rear window without removing the defrostor lines? - I can't find a place to start peeling on the tint on the rear windows and I don't want to make a mess and drip everything on the rear shelf - plus the headrests sort of take up room. Would you reccoment that a shop do it all or can I least take the tint off the rear doors with a little work? Thanks - all replies appreciated.

Factory tint can't be removed. Plastic film tint can be removed with a heat gun I'm told.

I recently had my windows professionally tinted in one of my cars. I asked if I could remove the tint later, specially the rear window. They told me, no problem, and they would not damage the window defroster. I think they mentioned a plastic bag or something. They charge less than $100 for it but, I do not know if that was for the whole car or the rear window only. Call one of those places and get a quote. Plus, if they scratch your window you have a NEW window!

I know a pro can do it; I've had tint removed before.

Try 3M Adhesive remover. I found it worked exceptionally well at removing the adhesive invariably left behind when you tear the tint off.

If the c class window is like the 126 rear window, the defroster is between two layers of glass just like a windshield, have a good look, in that case you can use a razor blade. And lighter gas is a very good adhesive remover that doesn't damage anything, plastic paint or glass but your still going to need some elbow grease.

I have had good luck removing old tint residue with a spray bottle filled with warm water and mild dish soap, and of course a little elbow grease with a cotton or linen cloth.

Lighter fluid is also a great way to remove the adhesive residue, if you don't want to do much scrubbing... Just don't smoke!

Also, you may want to try a good glass polish to "clean up" some of the scratches caused by the steel wool.
