Issue for a True Tech RE: Mileage & New Cluster

My friends instrument cluster is giving him all kinds of problems so he found one at a junkyard cheap but the problem he has is...

that it has about 40K miles on it and his car has 60K. Is there any way to get this thing to go up, or will it show 60K when he plugs it into his car or will it just show 40K. Thanks for the help.

The junkyard car is a 98 C220 and his car is a 96 C230...

I could answer your question, but I'm not a True Tech. In fact, I'm not a tech at all, I'm an accountant.

Guess you'll have to wait for a True Tech to come along.

It will show whatever milage the old car was at (40k).
You could try contacting VDO OEM services and see if they would
reset your mileage for a fee.
Also, each dealership servce department should have a signal
generator designed to connect to the cluster and run the miles forward. Sadly, when turned up to max, (160 mph) the cluster
would take forever to add 20k. About 125 hours.
The biggest thing is to make sure 96 and 98 year clusters are
even compatible. (same connectors, functions, ect.....)
and keep in mind, a 98 230 cluster will have an active FSS program running even thought your 96 didn't use Flex Service.
Good luck.
