None of the door locks, or fuel door lock, or trunk lock functions on my 82 240D. The vacuum pump and resevoir do appear to operate. There is no vacuum to the valve in the drivers door. Tracing the main vacuum line from drivers door, thru the firewall, it goes to two plastic valves located on the cam cover, which are operated by a cam on the throttle linkage. What are these valves? I have vacuum up to the union near these valves, but none past. Is this some kind of shuttle that regulates vacuum by engine speed?

The vacuum for the A/C controls and the Door locks comes from the brake booster vacuum supply line. So does the vacuum for the transmission controls. THEY DO NOT COME through the same port off the supply line. For many reasons they can not be put together. The biggest reason is that the vacuum to the trans is dropped to zero at full throttle. That would play hell with the A/C and door locks if they were on the same line.

The point of this is that the lines to the door locks shouldn't be attached to the lines at the valve cover. Those are the EGR and trans control systems.

The supply line should come from the booster line and split to the A/C (green), Door Locks (yellow) and the shut-off system (brown). There are two yellow lines as one goes to the vacuum reservoir in the truck and the other goes to the drivers door master switch.

Thankyou so much! I couldn't see what door locks had to do with engine speed-- perhaps a previous owner mixed up some lines? Maybe this has something to do with the improper trans shifts? Only got this project car a week ago.

Steve has given you valuable advise. Now to put it into action, we offer the CD rom set that covers your 123 chasis car. It is the same one that we use in the shop.

Yipeee! Thanks again for the help-- the whole vacuum system was in total disarray, managed to get it back together, now tranny shifts great, door locks next. I would be buying that CD NOW, if only I had a computer (I use Web TV). I'm sure that would make the job much easier.
