Any particular reason why a shop would use NGK resistor spark plugs in an '86 560 SL, which is factory equipped with 5k ohm resistor plug wires? Any benefits? Any harmful effects to the ignition system?

It will add resistance to the system. This could make any weak points show up a little sooner. I would just make them change it to the factory Bosch plugs.
