Hard starting for 85 190E

Hi All,

I am having a hard starting problem with my 1985 190E that I can't seem to figure out. When starting the car when it sits overnight or is cold, the car will start briefly and then quickly idle down until the engine quits. After I do this 3 or 4 times, the engine will finally stay running. If I try to give it even a little gas to try to keep it running, it cough's and immediately dies. It will cough and die if I try to give it gas quickly until it is completely warmed up, when it then runs perfectly. Warm starts are no problem. I have replaced the fuel pump, filter, plugs, and air filter with no change. My next guess would be a possible defective coolant temp sensor, but am not familiar enough with these engines to be sure. Any advice would be appreciated.

Coolant temp sensor is a likely suspect. I have the following values for an '84 2.3, and would bet they are the same for '85.

at 20C 2200-2800 ohms
at 80C 290-370 ohms
at 100C 140-220 ohms

The slope is close to linear, but not quite.

Measure between the sensor pin and ground, and be sure you distinguish between the temp sensor for the KE system and the temp sensor for the IP gage.

Thanks for the values, I'll be breaking out the meter tomorrow and see how they match up....

Was it a foiled temp sensor?

Cheers.:)

No, it was fine. The answer is in the follow up thread bizarro OVP problem solved!
