Exclamation 73' 450se stalls at all speeds, cranks over then dies

guys, i need your help please
My 1973 450se W116 has been acting very unreliable the last month. at any speed it will completely stall out, sometimes it will catch again, sometimes it doesen't.

there are alot of posts about newer cars doing this but nothing of this era.

also when i try to restart it, it will crank and fires up, but as soon as i let off the key it dies again.

i really need your help, it is on the side of the road somewhere in florida

i'm a do it yourselfer and will be willing to try anything as a learning process

Check fuel pump and relay, although I don't think this is the problem.

Most likely you have a corroded connection on the 0.4 ohm ignition resistor on the ignition. This resistor is bypassed when the key is in the crank position, so it will run so long as you are cranking, but die as soon as you release the key because the ignition is cut off.

I don't remember if it is the top or bottom one on the w116, but check both for condition and connections. Corroded electrical connections cause all sorts of strange things.

Well, sometimes the cause actually matches up to the symptoms...

Glad you are running again!
