It's a thermal vacuum switching valve of some sort. Probably for the EGR system if you have an EGR valve. The ECU and gauge temp sensors are further back along the same line.

Follow the vacuum lines, see where they go.

How does the engine breathe with the crankcase vent capped like that?

Good question. Bubba's been working on that car! Get the crankcase vent system back to OE spec. The plugged passage is the fresh air inlet. A molded hose should connect the large nipple on the air cleaner cover to the plugged opening on the cam cover.

my 87 260E has the same thing. I took it off once just to see what it's function was. the car ran fine and no warning lights lit up either. so what does that mean ? There must be some function but what is it specifically ... ?

Thanks sixto,

I you are right, the ECU and gauge temperature sensor are more on the top of the engine as you say on the same line.
What is EGR?

The vacuum lines go , one to the idle control valve, the other on ignition unit, if I am right.

My car has irregular, unstable idle when hot temperature. Does this device have an iinfluence on the idle? ECU temp sensor is new,
I have posted a topic "loss of power while running" any suggestions?

There is no electrical connection on that so I do not beleive it will trigger one light.

You say you removed the one on your car, did you have the engine running without the device? any coolant leak?
Does it run without the device?

I had the car run without it for two days. The reason.. the plastic tube broke off and till I had it replaced the car was running without it attached to anything. Everything was fine. I didnt notice any difference. And I dont think it has any coolant going through it either...

Thans Sixto,
here is the new thermal vacuum switch , do you know if both connections are equivalent or there is an order , which one goes to the electronic ignition module?
