1989 190E ABS Light

I have a 1989 190E 2.6 and I want to know what does it mean when the 'ABS' light comes on and what is ABS?

ABS is anti-lock brake system. The ABS light being on means there is a fault in the system, it might not even be working (although the brakes will still work in the normal way without ABS. The cause should be investigated.
