W140 95 S420 front wheel alignment

Does the W140 steering box have a centering pin arrangement like a W126? If so, where is it? I see a plug between the pitman arm shaft and the frame rail but alldata.com says it's a play compensator.

On the subject of the play compensator, is this a service item? Should I check it for wear? Will I get a PS fluid shower if I remove the plug?

Thanks,
Sixto

Sixto, How is the All-Data ?

Is the All-Data a good thing for DIY servicer owner? I see it is 24.95 per year. Is that what you have, a yearly support type? I have needed a repair manual for several questions about interior trim removal , and will need it for routine service instructions.

I had the MD CD on my 300E, 87. (but it was not all that good), so was hesitating to call about the S420, 95 I have recently purchased.

Sorry I was no help on your seat part number question !

Daniel, alldata.com seems to have a lot of itnerior trim removal processes that I don't remember seeing in the W126 MB CD manual. It guides you through removal of the door panels and headliner at the very least. There's a section on removing the cubby above the AC vents but nothing on removing the optional phone in the same location. I'd say it's worth at least a year.

To the point, however, I didn't find an answer to the question posted above.

Steering "Play Conpensator"

Sixto, Have you found out any more about the "Play Compensator" adjustment on the gearbox ? Mine car, (95 S420), has what I consider too much almost free play. About 1" or possibly more that DOES move the wheels BUT feels really loose or over-power assisted. Sometimes I get a small knock sound if the wheels are turned L to R and back etc while going slowly or stopped. Dealer says it is "within specs" and will not repair under Starmark Warr. ?? Service says the adjusted the box ---- but somehow I doubt the turned anything. Figure they just looked at it and decided that it was not bad enough that MB would pay them back if they replaced the gearbox.
Any advise or info you have would be appreciated.
Does the type of Fluid have any bearing on this sort of problem. I bought some MB power steering and plan a change of fluid, hoping that PO had use ATF or incorrect fluid.

Luck to you,

DanielW
